"There’s nothing you need beyond the pleasure of being there. It confirms your own decision to go to the theatre. And when you leave the theatre, there is a superstructure that continues to grow, and that burns you, like a fire, whose logic is this: you burn me and I cannot not burn. This fire cannot be calmed, as if it had touched something outside of my reason, outside of my conception […] I have understood nothing, except that this is the situation in which I find myself. This, I believe is the future of theatre."
- Chiara Guidi, Societas Raffaello Sanzio
I Am This
Not Another Theatre Company is a new collective of young Wellington theatre makers. It is a collaboration between four Wellington high schools and is made of actors, artists, dancers, directors, designers, costumers, and writers who have all come together in the interest of making new theatre.
For their first devised piece the company has drawn inspiration from avant-garde Italian theatre company Societas Raffaello Sanzio. Their journey has also led them through half a century of avant-garde theatre and so their work is undoubtedly founded in the abstract. Their influences go well beyond this though and the almost overwhelming gamut of influences has made it's way into the performance as it seeks to reconcile the place of the individual in a world so deeply fragmented. Using the internet as a structural device, Not Another will explore the non-linear and fragmented realities that we indulge ourselves in everyday and will offer up tragic images of an all consuming isolation and loss.
Wonderfully ambitious, Not Another have sought to work in the realm of imagery, often eschewing language altogether. The end result is a litany of images that don't allow for cool reflection but rather confront the audience with the burning reality of the image.
Not Another Theatre Company is: Abe Hollingsworth, Gabby Bush, Sam Skoog, Oscar Shaw, Lucy McLean, Dusty Johnson, Priya Parag, Bei Campbell, George Niven, Charlie Pleasants, Gussie Larkin, Eleanor McKitterick, Lydia Buckley, Jimmy Feeny-Toebes, Ella Gilbert, Tim McDonald, Lydia le Gros, Will Matthews and Morgan Watkins.
